This is a collage of some of the first jewelry I shot for Anita Mallory Designs (side note – if you need to get some jewelry, check out her stuff!). This was shot per agreement on a plain, pure white background for her online and print catalogs.
Notice the visibility of the shape and dimensionality of the white elements in the earrings on the left. Accurately capturing pure white objects on a pure white background isn’t easy. It’s important to convey the quality and brightness of the white subject while at the same time clearly delineating its outline and accurately representing its contours without the shadows falling too heavily into darker shades.
Also notice the character of the stone on the far bottom left ring. The stone is glossy and has a translucent nature to it. Careful lighting was employed both behind and in front of the ring to highlight both of those characteristics. You can see some of the structure of the back of the setting through the stone, and the highlight tells the viewer that the surface is glossy.
